Biography of Luang Phor Phueng, Wat Sawang Arom, Suphan Buri

Luang Phor Phueng, a revered monk from Wat Sawang Arom in Suphan Buri Province, Thailand, was born in 1883 in Ban Phai Mu, Tambon Ton Tan, Song Phi Nong District, Suphan Buri. His parents, Harai and Pui, were farmers. After his parents separated, he lived with his mother and helped with rice farming from a young age. His mother, wanting him to be educated, sent him to study with Luang Pho Saeng at Wat Khlong Madan, where he learned Thai, Khmer, and chanting.

Ordination and Early Monastic Life

Luang Phor Phueng was ordained as a monk in 1945 at Wat Song Phi Nong under the guidance of Phra Palat Bunyang as his preceptor, Luang Pho Niang Inthachoto as his kammavacha teacher, and Luang Phor Nong Inthawanno as his anusavana teacher. A year after his ordination, he befriended Luang Phor Sod, who would later become the abbot of Wat Pak Nam Phasi Charoen. The two, along with Luang Phor Hom, shared a hut and frequently traveled together, studying Vipassana meditation under Luang Phor Plueum at Wat Khao Yai in Kanchanaburi Province.

Establishing Wat Sawang Arom

In 1919, Luang Phor Phueng moved to Wat Sawang Arom, Ban Kum Subdistrict, Song Phi Nong District, Suphan Buri Province, to establish and develop the temple. He was supported by Luang Phor Nhong, Luang Phor Sod, and Luang Phor Hom. He immediately began constructing the temple by organizing the villagers to dig a moat, plant coconut trees, and build an ordination hall. During this time, he distributed his sacred powder amulets as blessings to those who helped.

Expertise in Sacred Powder and Amulet Creation

A disciple of famous monks such as Luang Phor Niang of Wat Song Phi Nong and Luang Phor Nong of Wat Khlong Madan, Luang Phor Phueng was also a senior disciple of Luang Phor Sodh of Wat Pak Nam Phasi Charoen. When Luang Phor Sot created the Phra Phong Khwan amulet, he sought out Luang Phor Phueng's sacred powder to mix into his own amulets, underscoring the respect and esteem in which Luang Phor Phueng’s spiritual power was held.

Luang Phor

Phueng’s sacred powder, made over many years, involved writing sacred Yantras with chalk on a slate board and erasing them repeatedly, storing the accumulated powder in several barrels. When creating amulets, he used 108 sacred threads around the area and required those involved to cleanse themselves and observe precepts before participating in the process. The completed amulets were then chanted over for three months by monks in the chapel, followed by additional individual blessings for another three months.

Types of Amulets Created

Luang Pho Phueng crafted various types of amulets, including:

  • Prabhamonthon
  • Chiang Saen
  • Ok Rong
  • 7-layer type
  • Sangkhati
  • Chinnarat

Although his amulets are not as widely known as those from Wat Pak Nam, they are considered equally powerful and valuable, with a spiritual potency comparable to amulets worth hundreds of thousands of baht. His legacy as a monk of great spiritual strength remains deeply respected, particularly among those who recognize the true value of his work and teachings.
