Chao Khun Nor (CK Nor) Wat Thepsirin
Chao Khun Nor (CKN) – Wat Thepsirin, Bangkok
Chao Khun Nor was born on Saturday, February 5th, 1897 (B.E. 2440) as the eldest of five siblings. He was one of the first students to attend the Official University of the Kingdom of Siam, now Chulalongkorn University. After completing his studies, he became an officer in the royal court during the reign of King Rama VI, serving as the King’s closest attendant. After King Rama VI passed away, Chao Khun Nor was deeply saddened and left the palace in 1925 (B.E. 2468).
Although his parents wished for him to marry, Chao Khun Nor expressed his desire to become a monk. He was ordained on March 23, 1925 (B.E. 2468) at Wat Thepsirin, the day before King Rama VI’s cremation, as an act of merit for the late King. Chao Khun Nor vowed to remain a monk for life, maintaining a strict vegetarian diet and consuming only one meal a day. He was ordained by Somdej Phra Putta Koshacharn (Charoen), with Phra Putwiriyaaigon and Phra Udon Seelahkon as his Dhamma teachers.
Strict Adherence to the 227 Precepts
Chao Khun Nor was known for his strict observance of the 227 monastic precepts. It was believed that he could predict the future by examining palm prints, but he avoided such practices and declined requests from villagers who sought his help. Despite this, many people continued to visit him, offering gifts and seeking guidance. However, Chao Khun Nor refused all offerings, advising the villagers to give them to other monks instead, as they would gain the same merit.
His refusal to accept offerings upset some villagers, who complained to Somdej Phra Putta Koshacharn. When questioned, Chao Khun Nor explained that he had become a monk to dedicate merit to King Rama VI and needed to maintain his concentration on Buddha’s teachings. He wanted no distractions from the outside world, as they interfered with his spiritual focus. Upon hearing this, Somdej Phra Putta Koshacharn sympathized with and supported his decision.
Living in strict simplicity, Chao Khun Nor’s room was bare, with only essential items and no electricity. He spent his time developing insight through meditation, rarely interacting with visitors. The only exception was his nephew, who brought him vegetarian food from his family’s home.
Miraculous Healing with Foot-Washing Water
Chao Khun Nor had the unique habit of walking barefoot and on his tiptoes, never allowing his heels to touch the ground. He would wash his feet in a basin before entering his room.
Once, when a village was struck by illness, a desperate villager sought holy water from Chao Khun Nor to cure the sick. After being declined, the man took water from the basin where Chao Khun Nor had washed his feet and gave it to the sick villagers. Miraculously, they were cured.
When news spread, many people flocked to Wat Thepsirin, asking for the holy water, but Chao Khun Nor denied ever giving any. Eventually, a neighboring monk clarified that the water used was from Chao Khun Nor's foot-washing basin. Despite this, the miraculous healings further solidified Chao Khun Nor’s revered status.
